Mortal Kombat: Rebirth to spark 10 part web series

So you all remember the badass, but mysterious and confusing, trailer-like thing that came out this past summer called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, right? Well if not it's posted below to refresh your memory. The gritty re imagining of the Mortal Kombat world accidentally leaked on to Youtube in June and sparked the interested of many fans who were met with little explanation. Well, unfortunately it's not a precursor for a new Mortal Kombat franchise on the big screen, but it is the beginning of a 10-part web series directed by Kevin Tancharoen expected to test your might sometime soon as shooting begins in this month.



According to this quote from Joystiq Tancharoen didn't even intend to leak the initial segment of the series.

"It was still in its rough phase, but I couldn't send a 2GB file over email, so my friend said I could create a private page on YouTube and sent it to him to review," Tancharoen recalls. "It turns out it wasn't that private." 

 Another familiar franchise from the days of VCR's and MC Hammer has hit Youtube as well. This fan made short based on Raphael from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT to you heroes in half shells)  hit the tube recently and it is pretty slick. Check out 'Fight the Foot' below.

Rumor: Metal Gear Solid Trilogy Being Redone in HD for PS3

According to Playstation Official Magazine UK there are whispers of the the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy being remade in HD for the PS3. Is this totally awesome? Yes. Will it sell a bazillion copies? Yes. Call me optimistic, but if it's in the Playstation magazine this seems like it is shaping up to be for real.

Either way get your cardboard boxes (and apparently kick-ass ninja swords) ready for the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

How The 3DS works: Moving 3D Beyond The Glasses

After James Cameron dropped the Avatar bomb 3D became the love it or hate it of the film industry. Initially, copy cats used some editing techniques to turn originally 2D movies into lame 3D versions to boost up ticket prices (I'm scornfully looking at you Alice in Wonderland). Now almost every action movie is throwing on the "In 3D" tag to their movies when essentially it's no better then the old red and blue glasses people used to wear to watch giant ants and spiders take over cities. This is a good enough reason to frown upon the would be fad, but anyone who has seen Avatar in 3D knows that thanks to the cinematic God that is James Cameron 3D will be no fad, but in fact the future of anything that's on a screen.

Anne Hathaway to play Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises"

Actress Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle (a.k.a Catwoman) in the upcoming conclusion to the Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy The Dark Knight Rises according to a Warner Brothers press release.

Tom Hardy has been also been cast as Bane. Hardy had his breakout role as Eames in Nolan's sci-fi epic Inception.

Nolan said in a press release:

  “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”   

And referring to Hardy:

“I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Well, it appears we have some of our villians, and The Dark Knight Rises hopefully raises the bar on an already mind-blowing set of Batman movies.

Golden Globes Winners

The Social Network was the big winner at the Golden Globes this year. Taking home the awards for Best Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Director. Colin Firth took home best actor for his work in The King's Speech and Natalie Portman won Best Actress. True Grit wasn't the only movie to get a big old snub from the Globes, while Grit wasn't even nominated Chris Nolan's sci-fi action flick Inception didn't win a single award from it's four nominations. Golden Globe Picks

Rejoice movie lovers awards season is here! Well, more like awards pre-season. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has released its nominees for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards. Most of the 2010 titles causing major Oscar buzz have been nominated including The Social Network, Inception, Black Swan, and Toy Story 3, but the Coen brothers’ True Grit is notably missing from this list. Critics Choice Awards Winners

The Social Network is the winner of Best Picture at the 16th annual Critics Choice Awards. Some say the critics choice is an Oscars preview, is The Social Network the best film of 2010? Natalie Portman took home Best Actress and Toy Story 3 won Best Animated Feature, and Colin Firth won Best Actor for his work in The King's Speech. Complete winner's summary After the jump.

The Gorillaz released their newest album 'The Fall' for free to their fans on Christmas day, and it gets even stranger. Frontman Damon Albarn from the British alternative hip-hop group recorded the entire album on his iPad while on tour in America.

Very cool idea from the virtual band that has been doing things in their own unique way since they began in 1998. In this Billboard.com article Albarn states:

 "I literally made it on the road in America over a month. I didn't write it before; I didn't prepare it. I just did it day by day as a kind of diary of my experience in America," Albarn says. "If I left it until the New Year to release it, then the cynics out there would say, 'Oh well, it's been tampered with.' But if I put it out now, they'd know that I haven't done anything because I've been on tour ever since." 

 Good on you Damon. Maybe a sign of artists changing the shape of the music industry, maybe not. Either way, for him to record the entire album on an iPad is a testament to the changing times and also wicked cool. The album is available for free here after a brief registration. Trailer: The Beaver

The Beaver has two big things going against it: the inevitable vagina jokes (shame) and the fact that it stars Mel Gibson (shame x2). But I have high hopes for this one although Jodie Foster is hit and miss when directing. The cast is promising and features young up and comers Jennifer Lawrence and Anton Yelchin and the quirky and unique plot is enough for me to keep my eye on this one, even though it stars Satan himself.

Top 10 Underrated Films of 2010

Another year has passed and 2010 has given us some great flicks The Social Network, Toy Story 3, Black Swan are all creating Oscar hype, but there are always the hidden gems that slip through the cracks every year. When embarking upon creating this list I found it was difficult to tell which films were underrated. What makes a movie underrated anyway? Well, I decided that it comes down to a couple of factors. First of all maybe two of these films played in Edmonton theaters, and not for long. I also tried to find picks that the average moviegoer might not have heard of. Critical acclaim and media surrounding the release of the films also factored in. So without further deliberation here are the top ten films you never saw in 2010 after the jump.

Atari's Missile Command To Hit The Big Screen....Seriously

Video game based movies don't exactly have the best track record, but this is just silly. Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox has picked up "Missle Command" the popular Atari video game consisting of shooting down missiles to protect your city. With little to no subject matter to adapt to a screenplay writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama have their work cut out for them. Atari CEO Jim Wilson is set to executive produce. It gets worse, apparently this isn't the only old school video game that studio execs have taken interest in. Universal Pictures has picked up "Asteroids" and "Roller Coaster Tycoon". I remember when I was micromanaging my virtual theme park I would always think "man what a great movie this would make." The good news to come from all this is Sony has picked up the rights to "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" (cue nerdgasm).


And it's only a matter of time until this hilarious College Humor video becomes a reality. This is a sad, sad day...
