Golden Globe Picks

Rejoice movie lovers awards season is here! Well, more like awards pre-season. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has released its nominees for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards. Most of the 2010 titles causing major Oscar buzz have been nominated including The Social Network, Inception, Black Swan, and Toy Story 3, but the Coen brothers’ True Grit is notably missing from this list. My picks and analysis after the jump.

Some categories are chalked full of amazing films and actors this year, while others have a clear front runner. Christian Bale is almost a shoe in for best supporting actor for his amazing work in The Fighter, and Toy Story 3 is hands down the best animated film of 2010. Ironically, the best comedy or musical category is kind of a joke. With The Tourist and Alice In Wonderland being nominated there’s not much competition for a decent film like the The Kids Are Alright.

Colin Firth, James Franco and Jesse Eisenberg are the most notable nominees for best actor. Franco undoubtedly has the advantage, as he is pretty much the only actor on screen in 127 Hours and he does a brilliant job of it. Natalie Portman’s jaw-dropping transformation in Black Swan should push her above the likes of Nicole Kidman and the up and coming Jennifer Lawrence in the best actress category.

Best drama and best director are by far the most interesting and competitive categories at the globes this year. Best drama has almost all of the most critically acclaimed releases: Black Swan, Inception, The Social Network, The Kings Speech, and The Fighter. Though the Fighter was great, it can’t compete on the same level as the rest of the nominees. It will be interesting to see who wins between this year’s best films. With David Fincher, Darren Aronofsky and Christopher Nolan headlining the best director category it’s anyone’s guess which of these legendary directors will win, but give the edge to Aronofsky’s Black Swan one of the most wickedly beautiful films ever made. Best Picture might follow the Critics Choice Awards' lead and go with The Social Network, but I would be dissapointed, I think Black Swan is a much better film.

2010 was an outstanding year for original scores as well. We all know the now iconic score from Inception (BWAH), but 127 Hours and The Social Network sport some incredible music. Although Black Swan featured a fantastic score too, it couldn’t be nominated because its basis on the music from the original ballet Swan Lake. The Social Network should get the nod in this category for making scenes of Jesse Eisenberg doing computer programming both intense and exciting.

Some exceptional new television series made their way from your living room to the globes this year. The gripping World War II drama from HBO The Pacific is up for best mini series, and another new HBO series directed by Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire, is nominated for best drama. Also up for best drama is the zombie thriller from AMC stirring up a lot of hype, The Walking Dead. Some old favorites are back like Big Bang Theory and 30 Rock both up against the incredibly popular Glee for best musical or comedy. Steve Carell is nominated for his ever-famous role as Michael Scott on The Office, but he is up against one of the most hilarious new characters on TV, the neurotic Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory played outstandingly by Jim Parsons.

Whether or not you feel the Hollywood press giving out an award is any indication of the quality of a film, the Golden Globes is chalked full of fantastic nominees this year, and is at the very least it will tide us all over until the Oscars. The Golden Globes awards show will air on January 16th with the hilarious creator of The Office Ricky Gervais hosting.
